Emily Pacilio is a dancer/choreographer,
and her collaborator is her husband,
musician/actor/sound designer Gavin Price.
Together, they are
The Basics.
A true to life partner duo, The Basics is always a triple threat. Their process is one of sharing and learning, as well as patience and guidance. As Emily discovers how to project her voice, Gavin figures out what exactly a ball change is. This labor of love results in a deeply human experience, which is at the core of their work as a duo. As Emily and Gavin take on one another’s art forms, they tap into uncharted escapism for both comedy club and dance audiences. The Basics connect to people through fashioning worlds of mystery, movement, and cathartic laughter. The form is experimental and rigorous, but the message is full of joy and humor.
Music
Musical director Gavin is an accomplished musician and actor. He is an ensemble member and sound designer in critically-acclaimed theater company Elevator Repair Service, and works internationally, across the country, and throughout New York’s downtown theater and dance worlds. Gavin is a member of the bands The Witch Ones, The Tender Band, and his solo music project is The Gorilla.
Movement
In addition to her work with the Basics, Emily also performs and creates with Emily Craver and the Little Streams, CabinFever, Designated Movement Company, Trainor Dance, and Saint Fortune.
“It’s lucky to hear the flutes for dancing coming down the road”
CabinFever Presents, August 2018
The month of August brought about major change. After several jubilant years, we left a shared home filled with beloved friends to build a new one for the two of us. During this bittersweet transition, we have sought to bless each space with a celebratory dance. Part home video, part improvisational frenzy, and part choreographed flight of fancy, our film is a catalog of this moment in time.
The title, “It’s lucky to hear the flutes for dancing coming down the road” comes from a translation of a poem by Rumi, who believed in the use of music, poetry, and dance as a path to reach God. “Flutes for Dancing” as well as Rumi’s “The Waterwheel” inspired us with their language of exultation through communing. Change is hard, and the process of finding our new home was arduous; these poems helped to remind us to live in the spirit of love.
With that, we offer this film made for each other and our homes.
In 2018, CabinFever commisioned an artist each month to produce an original work inspired by the times we live in and the month the work is created, collectively mapping the trajectory of 2018 through dance, music, poetry, live performance, video and more.
CabinFever Presents was curated + edited by Doug Barber, Patrick Glennon, and Elana Jacobs.
